“If Only I Knew Then… What I Know Now!”

Community Awareness Night Sponsored by P.O.R.T.
(Parents of Recovering Teens)

Tuesday, October 16, 2007, 7:00 - 9:00 PM

What: A discussion of the struggles parents go through at the first signs of a drug problem with their teens, presented by parents who have been there.

This event is a special presentation and panel discussion about drug addiction, issues, conflicts and struggles that families encounter when they discover their teen is an active addict.  It is mainly for professionals working with youth in our community, who can be very influential in directing families towards their first steps in recovery before it is too late.  Media also are invited to attend, if they are willing to respect participants’ request for personal anonymity.

Who: Featured speakers:

A recovering addict: Hear a teen’s story about what is really going on out there, and what treatment has worked and what has not.

The parent of an addict: Will share their struggle finding treatment. “If I only knew then what I know now…”

The Honorable John Payton, Collin County Justice of the Peace, Precinct 3-2, will discuss his perspective as the presiding official in truancy and other cases involving adolescents in our community.

Sabina Stern, LMSW, LCDC, Collin County Substance Abuse Program Director. Ms. Stern does assessments for adolescents in Collin County and will discuss her observations on current patterns with teen substance abuse.

Jim Savage, LCDC, will discuss how professionals working with adolescents in any capacity represent the vital first link in the continuum of care, as they hold the potential for initiating the assessment process, and, as such, possibly saving a life as a result. The topic of assessment is therefore of vital social importance, yet is often overlooked.

Doors will open at 6:30 PM; refreshments and a buffet dinner will be served.
