Treatment Overview

Clients complete written assignments from the Imagine Program curriculum, which correspond with the 12 Steps of recovery ( click here for more information on Imagine Program curriculum). They participate in group therapy, education, and activities sessions. Clients establish an outside support network through AA or NA and are required to obtain a sponsor and begin working the 12 Step program.

Imagine utilizes a creative approach to examining treatment issues. Music, art, storytelling, meditation and other experiential modalities create an interesting and relaxed atmosphere, which lowers resistance to treatment and leads to a more sincere level of client participation.

During the first portion of treatment clients identify issues that need to be addressed and establish a commitment to making positive changes in their life. They identify negative issues that lead to self-defeating behaviors and begin to focus on ways to replace these and set positive goals for the future.

A unique aspect of the program is the opportunity for clients to attend a weekend camping retreat and complete a Vision Quest. This is a rite of passage ceremony that allows them to symbolically release negative aspects of their life and begin to identify positive characteristics and set goals for the future. The intrigue of doing the Vision Quest creates incentive and engages clients in the treatment process. Parents and aftercare clients attend the campouts to support those completing their vision quest. Clients must “earn” the privilege of attending the campout by demonstrating sincere effort in their work and being a positive member of the group.

The second portion of primary treatment focuses on relapse prevention planning and completion of a “Statement Of Identity”- a formal summation of all they have learned about themselves that is presented during a special graduation ceremony.

Program Goals and Objectives

The goal of the Imagine Intensive Outpatient Program is to support the adolescent and family in obtaining and maintaining ongoing recovery support from addiction and other self-defeating behaviors. We believe that successful treatment depends upon involvement and cooperation among the client, program staff and the parents/guardians.

Specific objectives include :

  • completion of the Imagine curriculum
  • abstinence from all mood altering chemicals
  • chemical dependency education
  • 12 Step orientation
  • relapse prevention planning
  • behavioral contract
  • improved communication skills
  • enhancement of family structure
  • improvement of peer relations and social outlets

Treatment Planning

During an initial meeting an intake assessment and psychosocial history will be completed which will be used to create a problem list and master treatment plan.

The client's treatment plan is individualized and will identify the client's and family's strengths and weaknesses and will focus on short and long term goals to improve the family's overall functioning. This plan will be periodically reviewed, evaluated, and modified as needed to meet the client and family's changing needs throughout the course of treatment. This treatment plan will also include extensive discharge planning to insure a successful transition from IOP to their community.

Intensive Outpatient Program Components

Group Therapy : Each client will attend scheduled group therapy sessions. Imagine creates a uniquely safe and supportive atmosphere, which facilitates open and honest sharing, risk taking, and feedback from peers, allowing clients to address their issues and receive support from others. Within this process clients will become more aware of their defenses, feelings, values, and how these may have been compromised through self-defeating behaviors.

Multi-Family group: This group provides a therapeutic environment for clients and their families to address issues related to recovery and other issues related to the family system. Families are helped to identify dynamics within the system and are assisted in developing healthy resolution to their issues. This process also allows families to see that they are not alone and receive support from others who are farther along in their recovery process and to receive education on healthier means of confronting unhealthy behaviors and attaining recovery on both an individual and a family level.

Home Contract: The home contract is a tool designed to maintain needed structure as the client transitions out of treatment. Consequences for unacceptable behavior are defined in advance. It is up to the client to follow this contract and the parents to hold the client accountable. The client, parents, and counselor will have input into the creation of the contract, and all will work diligently in insuring an additional aftercare plan and relapse prevention contract are included.

Support Groups: Attendance at 12 Step support groups (AA, NA, Al-Anon) is required for both the client and the family. A schedule and recommendation of which groups are appropriate will be provided. Failure to comply with recommended meeting attendance (typically 3 per week in addition to IOP) will result in re-evaluation of client's commitment to recovery and continuation in Imagine IOP.

Individual and Family Therapy: Individual and family sessions are scheduled weekly during which treatment progress is evaluated and issues relative to the client's recovery and family dynamics are explored.

Imagine Retreat: A popular aspect of Imagine is the opportunity to attend a weekend camping retreat where clients do their “Vision Quest”- a symbolic rite of passage in which they let go of the “old self”, set goals for the future, and relate this to their recovery process. The campout allows families to bond and support their client's recovery in a meaningful way.

Intensive Family Weekend (IFW): This 2 day process allows families the opportunity to address the impact addiction has had for each member of the family, resolve conflicts and resentments, and begin the healing and family recovery process. The Imagine IFW includes a specially designed format that includes education on addiction, disease concept, and family recovery, and group therapy sessions to complete Family Intervention and Forgiveness and Reconciliation exercises.
